All the reviews are not yet in on the Akseli Gallen-Kallela retrospective, "Une passion finlandaise" (A Passion for Finland) which opened in Paris on February 7.
It's already safe to bet, however, that the outstanding collection of the artist’s works shown in the newly refurbished 5th floor gallery at Musée d'Orsay will be a critical as well as popular success with the French public.
Master of Colors and Light

This exhibition will draw attention for several reasons: first and foremost because of the beauty, force and mastery of Akseli Gallen-Kallela's paintings, his amazing sense of color and wonderful talent catching and rendering the precious light of the Far North.
For visitors who are not necessarily art experts it is also a rare privilege to witness the lifelong evolution of a cosmopolitan painter influenced by various art movements in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
Northern Exoticism
It's an accessible show for all publics because Gallen-Kallela’s themes are universal - while the "actions" are mostly placed in a little known, faraway culture. The French have always had a penchant for the "exotic", but traditionally they looked southward for new discoveries. By now, they seem to have run out of "Club-Med" countries as well as other cultures in the sun and begun to turn their attention to the mysterious North with its unspoiled nature and vast, sparsely populated expanses.
